Redeeming Wealth – Tithing Part 1

There has been nothing more divisive in the body of Christ than tithing. If we were in Moses’ time I suspect we would still be facing the same issues. The tithing message gets under many mature believer’s skins. If we live under the new covenant why does God require it of us? Many have gone on to argue that we are under GRACE and we do not need to adhere to paying the tithe.

Genesis 14:18-20 NKJV
Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was the priest of God Most High. And he blessed him and said: “Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; And blessed be God Most High, Who has delivered your enemies into your hand.” And he gave him a tithe of all.

Abraham was a direct descendant of Adam, his father Terah was a one of Shem’s son’s whose Great-grandfather was Noah, the tenth from Adam and the one who experienced the flood and God’s salvation (see Genesis 11:10;27-32). I don’t have time to describe the significance of this, but it is should not be lost to you dear reader, these details are highly significant. The point I want you to see and note is that Abraham preceded Moses and the Law.

Second, Abraham was descended from Adam and therefore had what Apostle Renny McLean calls an open ear, that is he could hear God, it was in the family, they were raised as bible believers! Finally, his entire family had been taught about tithing. One of the fascinating things you will see if you carefully read Genesis 5, Adam lived long enough to see most of the ten generations that came after him. That means they were taught by him what he had learned about God the Father. We assume often that after Genesis 3 he disappears, but a careful study of the genealogy reveals a span of more than 800 years with his kids and great-grand kids.

Now you may be asking what is the relevance of all this, how does it relate to tithing and you? Is tithing a way for pastors like me to extort money out of unsuspecting believers as many these days are prone to believe? How should you deal with this matter as a believer, should you be giving blindly and not ask any questions?

Firstly, I want to establish that the tithe Abraham gave to Melchizedek was before Moses and the law at Sinai. Second, Abraham is the father of faith, not Moses, no to disparage Moses see here:

Galatians 3:7-9 NKJV
Therefore know that only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham.
8 And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying, “In you all the nations shall be blessed.”
9 So then those who are of faith are blessed with believing Abraham.

Our tithe is to redeem our wealth which was curse under Adam, there is a curse on the earth that will be part of what the Lord’s second return will resolve.

Malachi 3:9-11 NKJV
You are cursed with a curse, For you have robbed Me, Even this whole nation.  Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, That there may be food in My house, And try Me now in this,” Says the Lord of hosts, “If I will not open for you the windows of heaven And pour out for you such blessing That there will not be room enough to receive it. And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, So that he will not destroy the fruit of your ground, Nor shall the vine fail to bear fruit for you in the field,” Says the Lord of hosts;

Further, the scripture says in Genesis 3:17-19 NKJV (emphasis is mine):

“Then to Adam He said, “Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it’: “Cursed is the ground for your sake; In toil you shall eat of it All the days of your life. Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you, And you shall eat the herb of the field. In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread Till you return to the ground, For out of it you were taken; For dust you are, And to dust you shall return.”

Finally, Romans 8:19-21 NKJV says;
“For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God”

Finally, when we give our tithe, our tenth God does breaks over us the curse placed on the earth after the fall, under the first Adam. Paul also adds that creation is currently suffering from corruption because of the curse. Moreover, the currency of heaven operates by faith and obedience, more on this in my next piece.

When we sow that seed of our tenth, God is able to bring about His government into our finances and according to Isaiah 9:7, and of this government, there is no end to it. The tithe gives God permission to interfere with your finances and bring His blessing on it. The system of God’s government begins to work for you when you respect its rules, obedience and absolute in God and His Son’s completed work on the cross.

Finally, allow me to share this thought, true wealth is people(Souls). God places no real value in money, but His emphasis is in our hearts especially if they turned towards His Son and in subjection to Him.

God bless you
