In The Service of The King
The happiest and blissful time I can ever recall was during my second year of university. Sashin Moodliar, my best friend and I were serving God without any care to our well-being. We would be out night after night winning souls, there was no place we could not go. We were willing to give of our earthly goods, as few of them as we had when we see a need we gave.
One night, we ministered to a prostitute in the middle of Cape winter, she was cold and wet, I gave up my warm fleece which I loved dearly, because it did not feel right to minister to her that God was love yet I was not demonstrating that love at the time. I loved serving others, still, do. You see we are most effective when we are serving, God’s character is visible in us as His children when we serve others.
Matthew 19:28-30 NKJV
So Jesus said to them, “Assuredly I say to you, that in the regeneration, when the Son of Man sits on the throne of His glory, you who have followed Me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife[k] or children or lands, for My name’s sake, shall receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last first.
I want you to note three significant things Jesus points out: first He must be crowned as King first before the gifts will flow (see verse 28). The reason the disciples will rule was as a consequence of He, the Messiah Nagid (Messiah the King) was revered and restored back to His former glory. Second, the twelve will sit on thrones and judge all of twelve tribes of Israel once the first condition of Him being glorified is fulfilled.
Finally, anyone who has left houses; family and even spouses (one wife to one husband) and lands, we have His word, that in this life not the next, we are to receive an hundred-fold and we will inherit eternal life. I like this, this is really the Gospel, the good news. Rewards in this life and in the next. However this will be premised on one critical condition, you and I must be in His service.
Another version, promises the same rewards with persecution. God wants us well prospered in this life but not to be without treasure that matters, eternal life with Him.
Galatians 6:7 NKJV
Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.
God continually wants us to keep our post, we are only going to prosper if we remain in His service. Notice that when we are in His service, the rewards due to us are not only limited to this life but we inherit eternal life, that is no small thing friends, eternal life is life with God and in His presence. There are many distractions today, people who enjoy serving are often frowned upon and mocked.
I don’t know about you but serving others and God can be tough, but I want to encourage you that serving God is never in vain. He not only uses our service to make the world better but through our service develops Christ-like character in us. Nothing is more important in God’s kingdom than service, our Lord did not come to be served but to serve, what an example of real leadership.
As you go about your business this week, I want you to be reminded that serving God or men is never futile, but it is character-building and also making us become more like Him. My prayer for you is that your heart’s desire may be like that of the Apostle Paul as you serve Jesus the King:
Philippians 3:10-11 NKJV
that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death, if, by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead.
God bless you
